She obtained her primary medical qualification (MBBS) form Grant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals in Mumbai and then went on to complete specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynecology (MD) at Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences.

Before moving to Australia, Sonal worked in the Fertility Clinic and IVF Centre in Mumbai for three years, where she was an Associate Consultant and Senior Associate to the former president of the Federation of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Societies of India gaining valuable experience in the management of complicated cases of infertility.

In keeping with her love for vibrant cities, Sonal chose Sydney when it was time to move to Australia in 2004. Thereafter, she pursued further specialist qualifications in Obstetrics and Gynecology and obtained fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FRANZCOG) followed by subspecialty training in Infertility and Reproductive endocrinology at Genea and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney (CREI).

She also holds a Masters of Reproductive Sciences and Genetics from University of Sydney.
