Profile
Dr Sonal Karia is a certified subspecialist in Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology (CREI), a qualification held by less than 80 specialists in Australia and New Zealand.
She is committed to providing the best level of care and treatment to couples experiencing difficulties in conception. Education & Experience
Sonal was born and brought up in Mumbai, one of the most vibrant cities in India. It is a fascinating city, throbbing with life, and, for many people, the city that never sleeps.
She obtained her primary medical qualification (MBBS) form Grant Medical College and JJ Group of Hospitals in Mumbai and then went on to complete specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynecology (MD) at Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences.
Before moving to Australia, Sonal worked in the Fertility Clinic and IVF Centre in Mumbai for three years, where she was an Associate Consultant and Senior Associate to the former president of the Federation of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Societies of India gaining valuable experience in the management of complicated cases of infertility.
In keeping with her love for vibrant cities, Sonal chose Sydney when it was time to move to Australia in 2004. Thereafter, she pursued further specialist qualifications in Obstetrics and Gynecology and obtained fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FRANZCOG) followed by subspecialty training in Infertility and Reproductive endocrinology at Genea and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney (CREI).
She also holds a Masters of Reproductive Sciences and Genetics from University of Sydney. She has wide ranging skills in the management of infertility and assisted conception techniques, both female and male. Her interests include the management of long-standing and complicated cases of infertility, preimplantation genetic diagnosis and gynae-endoscopic surgery.
Sonal has a special interest in genetic screening for inherited disorders, recurrent miscarriage management and fertility preservation for patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Affiliations
Sonal is an accredited specialist with Genea – World Leading Fertility. She is a consultant obstetrician and Gynecologist at McArthur Health Service (Campbelltown and Camden Hospitals) in South Western Sydney where she enjoys teaching, training and supervising junior medical officers and specialist trainees in obstetrics and Gynecology.
She is also a visiting medical officer at Strathfield private Hospital and Sydney South West Private Hospital.
Consultation
Good communication is vital and Sonal takes the time to explain procedures and treatment options to patients. Apart from English, she is fluent in three Indian languages – Gujrati, Hindi and Marathi.
An initial consultation lasts for an hour, giving enough time for Sonal to understand the fertility issues and challenges faced by new patients. She is contactable via email or phone and is available for Skype consultations for patients outside Sydney Metropolitan area.
Sonal - the person
When Sonal does not have her “doctor” hat on, she likes to spend time with her family and friends. She loves travelling, Bollywood films and music and enjoys cooking a variety of different cuisines.
